Due to current pitch conditions at Devizes RFC, our close friends Chippenham RFC kindly allowed the club to use their AGP pitch for the pre-season fixture against Chard. Chard were a side that had, like Devizes been recently promoted to level 6 and were looking to work on a few bits going into their league campaign. Devizes travelled with a squad of 20 or so, albeit with a number of regulars missing. Those who played acquitted themselves well against a powerful, direct side.
Devizes took the lead with a wonderfully well worked try with new recruit Rabeta dotting down. Chard responded with some forward surges and despite a potential crossing in the midfield, they went under the post to go into a 7-5 lead.

Devizes looked strong at the breakdown with stalwarts Rory Brown and Jorge Wadman turning over possesion throughout. It wasn't until the beginning of the 2nd half for the next score, as ringing the changes, the Devizes pack assembled a strong maul and fly half Robbie McLean spotted a gap down the blindside to dot down to make it 10-7.
In the final quarter, McLean added further to his try tally following a great break from Quinn Clarke to extend the scores to 17-7. Chard responded well, as Devizes began to tire and indiscipline crept in, enabling the visitors to bag two scores in the final ten minutes to level proceedings to 17-17.
Thank you to Chard for coming up and we look forward to playing you next pre-season!
Devizes' pre-season fixture initially scheduled for this Thursday at Frome has been cancelled - the club awaits South West Rugby's decision with regards to the playing surfaces and if the season will go ahead as planned on the weekend of 3rd September.
